Doug Willis, who for decades covered California politics for the Associated Press from his perch in Sacramento, was an amazing man – funny, balanced, sane, profoundly accurate, detail savvy and unflappable. He died Dec. 15 at the age of 77. He was my political mentor, friend and boss, hiring me in 1980 to come to Sacramento as news editor. I saw the move as a chance to report on state politics and learn from a master. I did both for 21 years.

Former Senate sergeant gives account of shooting

A former state Senate security officer offered a graphic account Monday of a drug- and alcohol-fueled gun battle at his suburban Sacramento home in which one person was shot to death in the street. The case has drawn attention in the Capitol because of the connections to the Senate.

Fido and Fluffy will soon be able to join you for dinner at your favorite restaurant — legally. The governor signed legislation Thursday that allows people to take their dogs with them to the patios and outdoor sections of restaurants — something that many eateries already are doing but which has been illegal and carries penalties for violators.
