Devastating California wildfires have killed hundreds of people and destroyed thousands of homes and businesses in the past decade, with 2018 being the most destructive wildfire season in California history. Today, multiple fires rage across the state, and thousands of Californians are without electricity as a result of emergency power shut offs. What can be done to disrupt this cycle of disaster and mitigate the state’s fire danger?

9:10 a.m.-10:05 a.m. Panel 1 – Why?
Seven of the ten most destructive fires in California history have occurred in the past five years – why?  While Climate Change is one likely factor, other conditions – an aging electrical grid, for one – have played significant roles as well.  What have we done to exacerbate the state’s vulnerability to wildfire, and what can we do to reverse the trend?

Moderated by Scott Lay,The Nooner

 10:15 a.m.-11:10 a.m. Panel 2 – Preparedness
Wildfire disasters are now a fact of life in California – what can be done on a legislative/regulatory level to address these eventualities? Fire fees? Zoning changes? Local ordinances? What changes could make a significant difference?

Assemblymember James Gallagher; Nicole Mahrt-Ganley, American Property Casualty Insurance Association;Mary Massey, California Hospital Association;Mike Richwine, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.
Moderated byJudy Lin, CalMatters

11:20 a.m.– 12:15 p.m.Panel 3 – The Aftermath: Rebuilding
Once the fire is out, the real work begins. Communities devastated by wildfire will deal with the fallout for years, often decades. What is working, not working, and what can be done to improve the recovery process?

Darius Anderson,Rebuild North Bay Foundation; Mark Ghilarducci, Governor’s Office of Emergency Services; Darby Kernan,California Association of Counties; David Shew,California Fire Safe Council; Lea-Ann Tratten,Consumer Attorneys of California.
