Forget politics for a moment and concentrate instead on Nigel Tufnel Day, also known as “11-11-11 Day,” which is Nov. 11, 2011, and named after the lead guitarist of the legendary band Spinal Tap. The boys in the band were featured in the mockumentary This is Spinal Tap, and immediately ascended into superstardom – sort of – and actually toured – sort of – and the rest is history. But if you like rock bands, especially bad ones, you may want to celebrate Tufnel, who in the Rob Reiner film was played by Christopher Guest. When told that his amp’s volume only went to 10, he put it instead on 11, “which is one higher.” So at 11 minutes past 11 on Nov. 11, music geeks the world over intend to turn their amplifiers to 11 to honor Tufnel, whose interpretations of Little Big Daddy Coleman’s music can still bring tears to your eyes. What’s more, Tufnelians can pay homage twice – at 11:11 a.m. and 11:11 p.m. Doesn’t get better than that. At Capitol Weekly, we intend to play “Smell the Glove” and celebrate Veterans Day …
