Skinny

Farewell to Clark McKinley, a classic wire service reporter who served 25 years with United Press International and who is retiring after 10 years as a flack – a good flack, too – at the CalPERS’ press office. McKinley was sort of the ‘inside guy’ at the old UPI bureau here at 10th and L, where he reported, edited and rewrote copy like lightning – much to the intense irritation of the competing AP. But those pre-Internet days are long-gone, and when McKinley went to CalPERS he took those skills with him. He did press releases and info packages for the huge public pension fund, and answered reporters’ questions quickly and candidly, sometimes too candidly. Clark is an inveterate bike rider – so is his well-known son, Scott, by the way – and he used to make the 14-mile run in to work every day from Fair Oaks along the American River bike trail. See you later, Clark
