Governor to announce new gun safety legislation Wednesday

Gov. Newsom, from his Facebook page.

POLITICAL PULSE: In the wake of two mass shootings that claimed the lives of 18 people and left ten others wounded, Gov. Newsom, along with Attorney General Rob Bonta and other legislative leaders – and gun safety advocates – will announce new efforts to advance gun safety legislation.

The announcement is scheduled for Wednesday, February 1, 2023 at approximately 11:00 AM. The event can be viewed via livestream at the governor’s @CAgovernor Twitter page, the official California Governor Facebook page and the Governor’s YouTube page. The event will also be available to TV stations on the TVu Grid as “CA_GovernorPack” and on the LiveU Matrix under “California Governor.”

Newsom sparred Monday on Twitter with Senator John Cornyn of Texas, who had earlier shared a New York Times story asking why California’s gun laws don’t eliminate mass shootings. The California governor took aim and fired off: “Texas’ gun death rate is 67% higher than California’s.” As we go to press, Newsom’s reply has had nearly 15,000 retweets.
