Rod Hickman, the ranking corrections official in California, abruptly
resigned his post Saturday. What happened here? Does his departure portend a
major shift in state correctional policy?

Another failure for this administration. By the way–was there any news made
in San Jose?

It’s too early to tell if the move signals a desire to really shake up the
department, whether it’s just a sop to the union, or if it’s simply designed
to create the illusion of institutional change.

If anything, it’s publicly stating the obvious: Nothing’s going to change as
long as CCPOA is in charge.

Too many Californians are in prison. We all agree that the most violent of
criminals belong behind bars, but we need to stop making prison the only
solution. Home detention, GPS devices, drug treatment facilities, even
adult education options need to be alternatives that are considered
