Dining Out: Blimpie Subs & Salad
Blimpie is on K just east of 10th, in the heart of the K Street corridor, but it’s easy to miss. It’s right near the Crest Café on one side, and two doors down from Asuka on the other. On the corner is Pyramid, and across from that is Ambrosia, not to mention Cosmo and that new water-themed tavern that’s going in. All in all, that block between 10th and 11th on K is an eater’s and drinker’s paradise.
Blimpie is sandwiched in – no pun intended – these other places and it’s definitely worth a visit. Blimpie’s speciality is subs – they do that most and best. Just about everything on the menu is between $5 and $9, and the subs come in 6-inch and 12-inch selections on fresh-baked bread.
The menu is impressive: There’s Bufalo Chicken with peppercorns and provolone on Onion Poppy Ciabatta bread. The Ultimate Club has ham, turkey, bacon, Swiss cheese, tomatoes, peppercorns and dressing on Ciabatta, and the Sicilian features ham, prosciuttini, pepperoni, provolone, and creamy Italian sauce on Ciabatta.
If you want to give Ciabatta a rest, try the hot subs, such as the Meatball Parmigiana (first rate!), the Philly Cheese Steak, the Grilled Chicken Teriyaki, the French Dip or the Beef, Turkey and Cheddar. Make sure you get extra napkins.
The cold subs include the Blimpie Best, which has ham, cappacola, salami, provolone and prosciuttini and Roast Beef and Cheese, a favorite. All the subs include onion, oil, vinegar and oregano – a tasty reminder of Blimpie’s Hoboken, New Jersey’s roots. There’s also the Veggie Supreme, Classic Tuna and Turkey and Provolone.
Two attractions of Blimpie: the salads and the bread. The artisan breads include Honey Oat, Jalapeno Cheddar, Italian White, Ciabatta and Zesty Parmesan. The salads include the Grilled Chicken Caesar, which offers a four-cheese topping, and the Ultimate Club Salad, which has roasted turkey, ham and bacon, sprinkled with Swiss cheese and served with Classic Ranch dressing.
There are assorted other dishes, too. There’s the soup of the day or chili, in small or large helpings, and there are children’s dishes that include tuna, ham and cheese, or turkey and cheese subs.
Blimpie also does catering – they have party trays and offer giant subs of three feet and six feet in length.
