Capitol Weekly’s Top 100: Izzy Gardon

Izzy Gardon is not your typical gubernatorial Communications Director. Oh, he has all the usual skills the position demands: He is whip smart, a solid messaging tactician and understands the power of the internet better than just about anyone. It is that last front where Gardon stands out. Like Newsom, Gardon embraces all things digital. Also like Newsom, Gardon believes the best defense is a good offense, especially when it comes to hitting back at anyone – political opponents, media, etc. – he perceives as taking potshots at his boss. Along with Digital Director Camille Zapata and Newsom himself, Gardon crafted and oversees the aggressive social media campaign that so directly mocks Donald Trump’s own self-aggrandizing and attacking style. Critics hate it, calling the campaign immature, undignified and unbecoming of a California governor and likely presidential candidate. To which Gardon laughs because it’s pretty clear the “meme campaign” helped his boss overcome his own disastrous podcast idea and reestablish Newsom’s national reputation as a devout Trump antagonist. If (AKA when) Newsom hits the presidential campaign trail, you can bet Gardon will be with him.
