A moratorium on op-ed submissions
Image by Volkan ISIK. Due to a massive backlog in our queue, effective immediately Capitol Weekly is imposing a moratorium on new op-ed submissions through at least June 24th. We have been trying to avoid taking this step, but our backlog is now so large we feel that continuing to accept submissions now is just not fair to anyone, including us.
Capitol Weekly has always been a welcoming landing spot for your op-ed submissions on issues of statewide public policy. As such we have always received a VERY large number of submissions. But this year has seen numbers larger than anything we have seen before.
It has long been our policy to publish op-eds on a first-come, first-served basis. Even so, we have traditionally only been scheduling a week or so out. Due to this incredible increase in submissions, however, op-eds are now being scheduled as much as a month out. That has meant those pieces being in the publication queue for so long that the facts within them are becoming outdated, requiring us to go back to authors to ask them to revise their pieces.
This creates more work for you and for us, which benefits exactly nobody.
If you already have an accepted op-ed submission with us, don’t worry it will run as soon as possible. Otherwise, please check back with us after June 24th. If you have already spoken with an editor about your op-ed and need to follow up, please reach out to them directly.
And before you submit something in the future…please review our publishing guidelines here.
We apologize for any inconvenience. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Rich Ehisen, Editor in Chief
