Capitol Weekly is a publication of Open California, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization founded in 2012 to inform, enlighten and educate Californians about public policy and state governance, and to provide a platform for engagement with public officials, advocates and political interests. To meet this goal, Open California publishes continuing, in-depth, nonpartisan coverage of current policy and political issues, and hosts regular forums for public discussion of policy and California politics.
How many intern positions do you have?
Two per season
Internship roles/ responsibilities:
Interns will be treated as cub reporters; They will accompany editorial staff on interview assignments and will experience the process of building a news story. They will be trained in how to approach and report objectively, how to build and use a source list, and how to prepare a story for publication. Ultimately, their work will go through the same editorial process as any Capitol Weekly reporter, with the ultimate goal of publishing their work at Capitol Weekly.
Required qualifications:
Interns must have solid writing abilities, be self-starters, and able to report in a nonpartisan manner. Interns should be in the Sacramento area at least several times a week during their internship.
Preferred qualifications:
Enrollment in college level courses, college degree, or at least two years of related work experience
Minimum hours per week:
At least 10, but the standard is 16 hours per week
Other scheduling requirements:
Most work will be done offsite. Reporting work will largely be done in and around the capitol; writing will largely be done remotely and submitted online. Hours can be flexible with advance approval of supervisor.
Paid internship?
This is a paid internship. The standard 16 hour per week schedule works out to about $1000 per month.
Paid/reimbursed expenses?
There should be few expenses aside from parking. Parking in and around the capitol is largely metered, and will be the responsibility of the intern.
