13. Joe Nuñez

With 325,000 members and a staff of 435, the California Teachers Association commands attention in Sacramento and across the state, and much of the credit for keeping things that way belongs to Executive Director Joe Nuñez. Media coverage of the CTA centered around the Vergara teacher tenure case this year. The teachers’ union was ultimately victorious when the state Supreme Court refused to review an appellate court decision upholding existing teacher-tenure rules. It was a big win. Nuñez directed the CTA’s lobbyists for years before being elevated to executive director, but whatever his job title he maintains the CTA’s clout in Sacramento, according to numerous people we spoke to.
