The Skinny — Twitter Me This

Call this budget what you will (most of the adjectives we’ve heard cannot be printed in a family newspaper). But this will forever be the first-ever Twitter budget. Throughout the night’s marathon Senate and Assembly proceedings, it wasn’t just us journalists typing out messages with our thumbs for thousands of Capitol news junkies. Members themselves got in on the action. But nobody was as prolific, or as entertaining as Sen. Abel Maldonado or Assemblyman Tony Mendoza  in the lost hours between Thursday night and Friday morning. Maldonado got things started by alerting people he had just scarfed down a 1,000 calorie muffin. Then he took a little jab at the leader of his caucus during one of the night’s long stand-offs. “I’ve known Dennis Hollingsworth for 10 years and in every budget he would say “the longer we wait, the better it gets” What’s he thinking now?” Mendoza’s tweets trended toward the personal. “What do members do in between bill votes? We gather in members lounge and sing Hotel CA with guitar: gathered around like in a campfire. Nice.” Maldonado has kept up the Twittering the days since that floor session ended. Mendoza has not signed on since waiting for his flight out of town.
