Dining Out: Old Ironsides

Anyone who has spent any time in Midtown Sacramento after dark is familiar with Old Ironsides. For those of us who like some guitars in their music, instead of just drum machines, Old I is a mainstay of the downtown live music scene.

But Old Ironsides is also one of downtown’s best kept lunch secrets. The club’s old neon sign outside is a symbol of a fast-eroding era as Sacramento’s downtown becomes gentrified. For anyone looking for a break from the typical Capitol power lunching spots, Old I should move to the top of your list.

Folks may be surprised to find that the nightclub is also home to one of downtown’s best hamburgers. You can try the old traditional for $7.50, complete with your choice of fries or a green salad. Or go Mediterranean with a ground lamb burger, topped with feta, tomatoes, red onion and spinach for $1 more.

Vegetarians will also find something here. Any of the burger options are available with Gardenburger patties – and their cheaper than the meat versions.

But more surprising than the burgers are the great salads. The Greek salad, with a flavorful grilled chicken breast, is a meal in itself.

There are also some pasta options on the menu. We understand your natural reluctance to go there. But the kitchen at Old Ironsides has been a pleasant surprise to us every time we’ve gone back. And while we haven’t tried the pastas ourselves, whoever is working the stove back stage has earned our trust enough to make us willing to try them next time.

Of course, since this is a club first and foremost, there’s a great jukebox to keep you company, complete with everything you’d want on a jukebox, along with some local favorites you may not be familiar with. Grab a seat in the bar, and you can watch the day game at Wrigley, while sipping on a cold Boddingtons, and waiting for your Santa Fe Salad to arrive.

Around the Capitol, the legislative recess is the perfect time to go “off campus” a bit, take a little longer for lunch – do all the things people do when their bosses are not in the office. And if you’re looking for a relaxed atmosphere to steal away from the bustle of the Capitol, and maybe enjoy an adult beverage or two at lunch, some time in one of Old Ironsides comfy Naugahyde booths might be just what you’re looking for.
