ZOOM LINKS: COVERING CALIFORNIA, THURSDAY, MAY 30, 2024

Capitol Weekly presents COVERING CALIFORNIA: The Future of Journalism in the Golden State, Thursday, May 30, 2024.

Journalism as an industry is undergoing a massive transformation. Local news is being decimated, with an average of 2.5 newspapers closing each week in 2023. Since 2005 the US has lost nearly 2900 newspapers. Online news sites have emerged, but in limited numbers and greatly varying quality. California has seen a number of innovative  approaches to the problem, including nonprofit news models and legislative proposals to support the industry. What does the future of journalism look like?

Three panels of experts will examine these issues and potential solutions. Senator Steve Glazer will deliver the Keynote.

Other confirmed participants include: Senator Nancy Skinner; Chris Argentieri, Los Angeles Times; Nicole Carroll, Arizona State University/NEWSWELL; Greg Lucas, California State Librarian; John Myers, CalPERS; Christa Scharfenberg, California Local News Fellowship Program UC Berkeley; Danielle Bergstrom, Fresnoland; Neil Chase, Calmatters; Cynthia Moreno, Press Secretary for Speaker Robert Rivas; Larry Lee, The Sacramento Observer; Pamela Wu, University of California, Davis; Edie Lambert, KCRA 3; Laurel Rosenhall, Los Angeles Times. More TBA.
