On the first day they were permitted to do so, several of California’s largest gaming tribes filed a suit on Thursday alleging that the arcane system cardrooms and related businesses employ to offer “California Blackjack” and other Las Vegas-style games is in violation of state law.

OPINION – The California cardroom industry supports continued discussions regarding regulation of gaming within the state. However, it is essential that the discourse is not influenced by unfounded concerns from a few wealthy tribal casinos intent on creating a monopoly for themselves to the detriment of working California families and the communities served by cardrooms.

In the annals of California gaming history, there is perhaps no more infamous and consequential figure than Bob Lytle, who directly shaped California’s current gambling landscape right before he retired from the Attorney General’s office to go work for a cardroom – a cardroom where he was later investigated and ultimately lost his gaming license.

OPINION – The exclusive right to operate bank card games is constitutionally guaranteed to tribal nations as a path to re-establish our sovereignty and rebuild many of our tribal nations which were torn down by years of oppression and injustice. It is a right we take seriously, and a right we depend on to support our people.
