Our annual look at health care featured three panels looking at different aspects of health care in the Golden State: 1) A Status Report on COVID-19; 2) An examination of Gov. Newsom’s California CARE Court proposal; 3) A Look Ahead for 2023: Health Care and Politics.

Panel 1: A STATUS REPORT ON COVID-19
As California approaches 100,000 total deaths from the disease, we looked at where the state finds itself, two and a half years into the pandemic.

Panel 2: GOV. NEWSOM’S CARE COURT PROPOSAL
The legislature passed SB1338, which creates the Community Assistance, Recovery and Empowerment (CARE) Court, a new system which could dictate treatment for 7,000-12,000 people suffering from addiction or severe mental illness per year.

Dr. Mark Ghaly was appointed Secretary of the California Health and Human Services Agency by Gov. Newsom in 2019. As the head of the largest state Agency, Dr. Ghaly has led the administration’s approach on the health of Californians, including the state response to COVID-19.
