Complaints fuel auditor’s look at state employees

Few documents are as well-read among state employees as the report from the Bureau of State Audits, which runs a 800 hotline for people to call and file complaints of suspected misuse of state resources. The report–this time, it’s 73 pages–is typically a dreary catalogue of petty wrongdoing. But since many of us tend to be interested in others’ misfortunes, it probably reaches the Top 10 list on most employees’ reading lists.

“This report details nine substantiated allegations in several state departments and universities. Through our investigative methods, we found waste and misuse of state funds and resources, incompatible activities, a conflict of interest, and other improper activities,” State Auditor Elaine Howle reported.
Among the examples cited by Howle:
