Schwarzenegger’s day at the races, Antonio endorses, Phil points to his

The new PPIC poll is out today, and it has Gov. Schwarzenegger running 13
points ahead of Phil Angelides among likely voters.

The poll shows the governor with a 45-32 percent advantage, virtually
unchanged from the 43-30 spread in last month’s poll.

David McCuan, a political-science professor at California State University,
Sonoma, tells the Merc: “This race seems a bit premature to call for the
governor in early September, but Angelides sure looks like he needs a life
preserver and resuscitation already.”

At the stroke of midnight, the legislative session came to a close, and
series of multi-billion-dollar gaming compacts remained stuck on the
Assembly floor. “‘Members of my Democratic caucus are pretty irritated that
all these compacts came to us at such a late time in the legislative
session, and folks really don’t want to deal with this,’ said Assembly
