The Skinny: Spin, baby, spin

The race for the central coast just got a lot more expensive. Sam Blakeslee missed winning the seat outright by a whisker, as Democrat John Laird was able to force an Aug. 17 runoff. Since Blakeslee bested Laird by almost ten points, the Republican has to be the favorite going into the rematch. But we’re guessing the interests who dumped big bucks into this race won’t be content to sit idly by. Though we will be watching with great interest if and when Democrats bring an oil-severance tax proposal to the Assembly floor as part of a budget plan…Looks like the race for governor is going to be an ugly one. Whitman was on the air this week with a new 60-second spot painting Brown as a failed relic of a bygone era. The labor union-funded independent expenditure committee, which is serving as the de facto Brown campaign until Labor Day, best we can tell, responded with a new ad hitting Whitman’s entanglement in the Wall St. spinning scandal. Get those mute buttons ready, boys and girls…
