The Skinny: Rumors of G-Men

Nothing gets the Capitol going like a good rumor. And no rumor has been more persistent over the years than the one about federal agents snooping around the Capitol. Well, the rumor is back, though little is known about what, if anything, the feds are looking at. Senate secretary Greg Schmidt says no subpoenas have been issued. And nobody seems to know what the feds were looking for if they were in fact in the building. But members of the Legislature say they were given a general warning that agents were poking around, and to be on their best behavior. We’ve heard various names mentioned in accordance with a potential investigation, but a call to the local FBI outpost indicates there is no active investigation under way. That said, some of our most trusted sources have confirmed at the very least that they’ve heard the same Capitol chatter. Take it all for what it’s worth. Remember, the last time these rumors were going around, certain folks were convinced Senate leader Don Perata was being targeted. That turned out not to be the case. As to whether these whispers will ever grow into something more substantive, your guess is as good as ours. But you might want to keep your nose clean in the meantime, just to be safe…
