High court ruling on Prop. 12 could impact climate, consumers

OPINION:  A case before the U.S. Supreme Court — derived from a California ballot measure — could decide the fate of current and future state laws related to the climate crisis, harmful compounds in consumer products, and even the safety of baby food. The case involves Proposition 12, which was passed in landslide fashion in 2018 by 63% of California voters.

OPINI0N: Anyone who has lived through a summer in Sacramento knows that air conditioning is not a luxury, it is a necessity. When the temperature is well into the 90s, fans can only do so much; and when wildfire smoke blows in and blankets the area for weeks at a time, or when a heat wave strikes, conditions can get dangerous for people without air conditioning.

Californians are inundated with consumer labels. Some of these labels communicate valuable information, others do not. The sheer number of required labels almost guarantees that most of us will be overwhelmed by the fine print and the labels never read. This week, California policymakers are considering a bill (SB 763) that would add yet another label – this time to children’s products.

It is estimated that more than a million Californians are gaming online through overseas sites, which we know to be dangerous for gamers. These black market sites for Internet gaming offer no consumer protections.
