Top political analyst Allan Hoffenblum, who co-founded the California Target Book more than 20 years ago, died in his sleep, his colleagues said. Hoffenblum was 75. The Target Book, often described as the bible of political campaign professionals, analyzed the history, demographics and players — district by district — in the state’s legislative and congressional seats.
John Mockler, one of the most influential voices on California education policy for more than 40 years, died Tuesday of pancreatic cancer. He was 73. The architect of Proposition 98, the 1988 initiative that sets state support for public schools, Mockler also served as executive director of the State Board of Education and Gov. Gray Davis’ cabinet secretary for education.
Susan F. Rasky, a former Congressional reporter for the New York Times who taught for two decades at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, died Sunday following a long illness. She was 61.
