Is the Legislature adhering to the spirit of California’s new pay transparency law?

California is one of eight states with a salary range transparency law, but critics contend some employers are violating the spirit of the law by posting artificially wide salary ranges. But the private sector isn’t alone – the California Legislature is also guilty of posting extraordinarily wide ranges across numerous positions.

Advocates for greater gender parity in California politics believe that women could reach 50 percent – or beyond – before the end of the decade. On Election Day 2022, women took 11 seats previously held by men, three in the Senate and eight in the Assembly, bringing the total number of women in the Legislature to 50, or 42 percent of the membership.

Amid growing calls for women on corporate boards, and headlines about corporate wrongdoing like the sexual harassment scandals at Google, California’s 662 publicly traded companies have added 669 women to their boards in the past two years. This sea change is driven by California Senate Bill 826, which took effect in 2019.
