Community colleges’ remedial classes spur racial inequity

OPINION: As a political science major, I’ve studied our country’s history and listened to my professors talk about political movements. I’ve learned that change rarely happens unless people speak up when they see inequities and injustice. That’s why I’m speaking up about a systemic injustice a t our state’s community colleges. These institutions disproportionately enroll Black and Latinx students in remedial courses and this is a key driver of inequities in who graduates and transfers to four-year universities. It’s racist and it’s wrong.

Health care delivery in California is moving toward an integrated model that brings together physicians, nurses and other health professionals, each playing a specialized role as a member of a team. As professionals that have served in multiple roles on that team, and done the training for each, we believe we are in a unique position to comment on Senate Bills 323 and 622, which would alter the roles of nurse practitioners and optometrists, respectively.

A nip for underage wine-making students

Some thirsty, underage students in California soon may be able to sip on a nice chardonnay or a robust porter — legally. The reason is newly introduced legislation that would allow students enrolled in accredited wine- and beer-making programs to take a nip.
