CAPITOL WEEKLY PODCAST: Proposition 30 has qualified for the November ballot. The initiative, a proposed 1.75% tax on Californians making over $2 million per year to fund electric vehicle infrastructure and combat wildfires, has fragmented traditional Democratic coalitions, splitting unions and putting Gov. Gavin Newsom – who has pursued an aggressive strategy to phase out gasoline-powered cars – in opposition.

OPINION: With ballots in the mail and primary day a week away, Gavin Newsom recently ran a TV spot aimed at one of his five gubernatorial opponents – Republican John Cox. The broadside focused on guns and called attention to Cox’s support for the National Rifle Association and his opposition to gun control. Smart move, you say.

Democratic presidential contenders Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders plan on spending about $2 million combined on TV ads in California as their primary election campaigns hit the final stretch. Clinton began her effort Thursday, with about $940,000 committed so far in those three communities. Sanders began the day before.
