For years, the Forum Building, the old art deco building located at 1107 9th St. in Sacramento, has been known as one of the best deals on office space near the Capitol. Last week, we got some indication as to why. Over two consecutive nights, 11 offices in the building were robbed, with thousands of dollars of equipment stolen from Forum tenants. Last Wednesday, two offices were hit. The next night, nine offices, including the Western Center of Law and Poverty and the lobbying offices of Vargas and Associates were hit. Afrack Vargas, who runs the lobbying shop with his wife, Sandra, estimates he lost close to $20,000 in the burglary. The day after the initial break-in, Vargas emailed his landlords to point out that the front doors to the building were easily pried open by sliding a small piece of metal in between them. The building owners did nothing to remedy the situation, but did send out an email complete with a list of dos and don’ts. (E.G.: DO: lock your door. DO NOT leave your purse or wallet on your desk). That hasn’t exactly sat well with Vargas, or other tenants in the building. But if you’re looking for some cheap office space, and security is not a primary concern, have we got a tip for you…
