Pension fund mouthpiece – er, external affairs director – Pat Macht is retiring from CalPERS after a 16-year run. Macht, who is launching a new career as a communications consultant, saw the huge fund nearly triple in assets from $85 billion to the current $230 billion. She was a great resource for reporters and helped newsies wade into the complexities of pension-fund politics and finance. She also was the spokesperson in many a story detailing allegations of corruption and insider dealing at CalPERS – not a pleasant task. Not surprisingly, Macht has news in the family: Her hubby Maury is a veteran Sac Bee journalist and her son Daniel – a former Capitol Weekly intern who wisely ignored everything we taught him – is a newshound in New York. We wish Pat well, and we assume she’s got a great pension. If she doesn’t, there’s no justice in the world…
